BachScholar Editions Vol. 78: J.S. BACH: Sinfonia from Cantata 29 (trans. Saint-Saëns) (9 pages) presents arguably the finest romantic-era piano transcription of Bach’s exciting Sinfonia from Cantata 29, which Bach reworked from his previously composed PreludioV from Partita No. 3 for Solo Violin. The once child prodigy and musical genius, Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921), pulled out all the stops on this electrifying virtuoso piano transcription of Bach’s famous work, which was first published in 1862. The present performance edition improves upon the currently existing edition by supplying ample fingerings, pedaling and expression indications, as well as a suggested metronome speed. Advanced pianists, concert artists, and audiences will absolutely love this first-rate virtuoso transcription in the romantic tradition. Published by: BachScholar.

Cello Power is a series of books designed to be used to expand the cello student’s facilityand knowledge of the instrument. The books are structured to focus on the advancedmaterials that appear in our cello literature. Most important are the exercises and myfurther recommendations on how to work on them. The process is first to digest thefundamental of each and thereby to enable one to build a solid technique in preparationfor the difficult passagework ahead. An example are the double-stop excerpts, which arebroken down into two-string bow patterns to aid in intonation and to clarify the spacingfor the left hand.Books 1 and 2 are planned to fill the gap left vacant by lack of materials covering, ina progressive order, the transition from the introduction of the thumb position into astudent’s studies and the work on the much more difficult application of this informationinto studies by Popper, Grützmacher and Piatti. Of course, then there are the ensuingrepertoire demands of the concertos of Dvořák and Saint-Saëns and such like.Book 3 is aimed at developing a sure and secure technique and facility in the lower areaof the cello. This includes material to help make the fifth, sixth and seventh positions lessawkward for the student. The goal is to aid in the ability of the student to become moreable to apply this technical comfort to the attainment of a more nuanced and emotionallyfulfilling musical performance on the cello.Cello Power is a series of five books designed to be used to expandthe cello student’s facility and knowledge of the instrument. “Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) is best known for his Carnival of the Animals and Organ Symphony. Yet, his Fantasy in E flat major arranged for Cornet or Trumpet and Piano remains popular in the advanced repertoire for the instruments. Saint-Saëns entered the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of thirteen, where he studied Organ and composition. He then went on to have a successful career as an organist and composer, writing his Fantasy in E flat major in 1857. The piece was originally composed for the Organ, but Henri Busser (1872-1973) recognised the work's significance and arranged it for Cornet or Trumpet with Piano accompaniment. To this day, Fantasy in E flat major remains prominent in the advanced brass player's repertoire.”.

When writing his Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33, Camille Saint-Saens created a 'classic' of violoncello literature. But the French musician even wrote other solo works for this instrument: a second concerto, two sonatas, the 'Swan' from 'The Carnival of the Animals' as well as a 'Suite with Piano Accompaniment' Op. 16. Premiered on 27 April 1866 and probably written shortly before, the work is based on the composer's study of tradition, especially of the form of the Baroque suite, integrated in a Romantic tonal language. Many years later (1919) the composer also presented a version with orchestral instead of piano accompaniment, and for this version he replaced movements 3 and 5 and changed the ending of the fourth movement. The present edition contains the text of the orchestral version: The five-movement suite begins with a prelude reminiscent of Bach which is followed by a pleasant serenade, a stylized gavotte and a sentimental romance before a passionate tarantella puts a virtuoso end to the piece. The enthusiastic, melodic 'Suite' is a valuable addition to the cello repertoire, suitable for both tuition and concert purposes.

Tantum ergo Sacramentum (Therefore so great a Sacrament). Saint Saens wrote two settings of this music, this one being unpublished without an opus number. It is a short liturgical piece he wrote in 1860 while working as a young church organist at L'Eglise da la Madeleine. The music, originally written for 2 sopranos, alto, organ and optional chorus is very simple in nature with a religious and atmospheric feel to it.Mr. Couturier has done a wonderful job arranging this 4-minute work for 8-part Brass Ensemble of moderately advanced performers.

A strong new composition for advancing groups, this dark and mysterious piece is both lyrical and lush. Reminiscent of Danse Macabre by Saint-Saëns, this work would be a great addition to any fall concert!.Diabolique (Dya- baw- leek), a. 1. Of the Devil 2. Fiendish: devilish: wicked.Danse Diabolique is a moody piece. It is meant to evoke images of a moonlit Halloween night, alive with fiendish creatures engaged in a demonic dance. Inspired by the work of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, this piece is best characterized by the expressive marking, sinister. The melody of this 6/8 piece is played in a smooth, legato style in contrast to the crisp pizzicato accompaniment. Care should be taken never to rush the pizzicato passages. Dynamics should be emphasized throughout, and sixteenth notes should be played off the string, with accuracy, in a spiccato style.

Le Rossignol or the Nightingale is originally a vocalise for Soprano solo from Saint-Saen's incidental music for the play, Parysatis written in 1902. This 4-5 minute work is all about mood.
Mr. Sauer uses the original key of B-flat, which lays perfectly for all of the bird-like calls that are in phrases which are slurred. The music has a lot of ad lib. tempo sections which gives the performer plenty of time to create that magic call of the Nightingale. Early writers thought it was the female that sang, but in fact it is the male. The Nightingale usually sings at night or just before dawn when other birds are silent and has a strong spontaneous song with an impressive range of trills and whistles.
